Love is the Answer, by Ben Craib, is his debut novel and also the first…
This weekend has been dominated throughout the world by news of the American election. I won’t comment on the result – QuoScript strictly does not take sides politically! – but it seems particularly appropriate that we are delighted to be able to announce that we have just signed our first American author, Mickey J. Corrigan, who lives in Florida.
Mickey’s book – an unusual crime novel with more than one twist – is called The Physics of Grief. It has a first-person narrator: Seymour, a down-and-out former teacher and semi-alcoholic who at the start of the book is guiltily haunted by the death of his girlfriend, tells the story of how he is lifts himself out of grief and apathy. The catalyst is a mystery man – Raymond C. Dasher – who enters Seymour’s life via a chance encounter in a café and persuades him to accept a job as a “professional griever”. A series of big adventures follow, some macabre, some sinister, some extremely funny, as Seymour encounters an improbably diverse but highly credible set of characters united only by the fact that all are interacting in some way with death – including, in more than one instance, actually precipitating it. Most complex of these is Milton Lasker, a former gangster whose relationship with Seymour is ambivalent, to say the least – at one point he tries to strangle him and even his overtures of help are terrifying. Dasher and Lasker are not what they seem – or are they? Does Seymour fail to read them correctly?
This short summary is very far from doing justice to a novel that can be read on several levels. Mickey is an accomplished writer who has published several other novels – and the descriptions, particularly of the scenery and wild-life in Florida – are hauntingly accomplished. I won’t reveal any more just now, because I don’t want to introduce any “spoilers”; but look out for more information about The Physics of Grief on this blog, including an interview with Mickey.
In the meantime, we invite you to celebrate with us. QuoScript was officially launched on 1st November. We’ve already attracted a great deal of interest in the national and trade press. Thank you for your support and continuing enthusiasm as we set out on a big adventure of our own.
